It seems strange to think of our area 10 years ago, before Ellesmere Children’s Centre (ECC), and other prominent childcare facilities like the Black Women’s Resource Centre.
Local people have worked hard to develop accessible, affordable, high-quality childcare that reflects the community.
Initially the ECC building was virtually derelict, with no glass in the windows. Sharon Curtis was employed as co-ordinator with one other nursery officer, and a steering group from the local community. Sharon was presented with a wish list and a bank account of £1,800. It’s an achievement that several of the original steering group are still involved, including Katherine Robinson, who is still Treasurer.
Arson attack
Memorable times for Sharon include getting the Lottery bid in 1996 for £110,000 to fund the project for three years. Then the arson attack a year later which caused £45,000 worth of damage. Sharon says the caretaker at the time just wanted to board up the building and admit defeat, but Sharon and the parents didn’t let that happen.
“They came in and cleaned and cleaned. And we were open again in six months.”
Awards
Winning the Burngreave Business Awards in 2005, and two more in 2006, plus the Duke of York ‘Good Practice’ award this year, has reaffirmed Sharon and the Centre’s commitment to childcare for Burngreave.
The highlight for this year is a staff visit to China, to experience early years childcare, teacher training and alternative medicines.
To sum up her time Sharon said:
“It’s been an interesting rollercoaster, but the benefits of intercultural exchange have been enormous.”
Anniversary celebrations will be held on 30th June 2006 at Ellesmere Children’s Centre. Everybody welcome.
