Celebrating Women's Day

Story: Camille Daughma

The theme for International Women’s Day 2OO6 was ‘Inspiring Potential’.

It is a day which is meant to look at the challenges women face as well as looking at their advancement and development. It’s also about offering support, embracing and enhancing women’s community: an international celebration of education and empowerment. All these themes were facilitated at the Verdon Street event on 8th March.

The event got off to a good start with a steady flow of women from all nations coming together to celebrate womanhood.

There were various stalls that offered both information on issues that affect women – for example domestic abuse; services; free health checks and pampering – massage, facials, hair and nails.

I was quite pleased at the turnout. I reflected three years ago, it was quite difficult to get such a good turn out at an event and the attendance usually dwindled after lunch, but this was not the case. We have definitely grown as a community. Together we can achieve so much more.

To all women who daily facilitate in various roles, you are our unsung heroes – RESPECT.
