The Messenger agrees with New Deal that attacks on Wardens should not be tolerated. But it’s also unacceptable for employers to put their workers at risk.
Unlike other Community Wardens schemes around the country, who always patrol in twos, Burngreave’s Community Wardens have been asked to patrol alone. The Messenger has also heard that emergency back up and communications are inadequate. While Wardens are issued with mobile phones to call the office, the office is sometimes unmanned.
In this situation is the solution to issue a warning to all Burngreave residents to ‘behave better or New Deal will withdraw the Wardens’.
The job our purple-uniformed Wardens do will inevitable put them at risk simply because they are out on the street in a uniform. Being asked to perform tasks, such as checking tax disks on cars, can only increase the risk by putting them in conflict with residents. Regardless of their role, any employee walking the streets of a city should have proper systems for support and backup.
