The unknown sculpture

Story by Moira Walker, BGEP

Rangers from the Burngreave Green Environment Programme (BGEP) have uncovered a stone sculpture that was immersed in an overgrown bush in Catherine Street/ Somerset Street Park, Burngreave.

The Burngreave Rangers team and local volunteers have been carrying out major site clearance as part of efforts to improve safety in the park. Working at the top end of the park, they have unearthed a large stone sculpture with the inscription ‘Somerset Street Open Space 1982’ and a picture of a person tree-planting.

This park has been a major problem for local residents, with problems of drug use and dealing, fly-tipping and vandalism.

It is obvious that a great deal of local community effort was spent on this park twenty years ago, the sculpture is fairly large and looks like part of a community initiative to plant up the park. We would love to hear from local people who played a part in the improvement of this park in 1982, and work with them in improving it now in 2005.

If you know any more about the sculpture or would like to learn more information about the Burngreave Green Environment Programme, please ring the office on 278 9651.
