Dear Messenger
I write in response to the letter in February's issue from Sally Stracey which raised some interesting questions and issues. Of Chinese and English heritage myself, living in Burngreave for the past 21 years has been nourishing and enlightening. I have found that we have engaged with one another positively, gradually achieving greater understanding and respect for our diverse cultures.
Having initiated and founded the Abbeyfield Park Multicultural Festival, I would like to say that the Planning Committee has always attempted to embrace as many cultures as possible – including ‘English’ culture. The festival is set in the Victorian Heritage Park; it features Sandwich Stalls, Anglo-Saxon woodturning, English games and sports such as bowls, performances by Rock bands while Morris Dancers and Brass Bands were also invited to take part.
Responses to adverts in the Messenger for stalls, workshops and performers were presented to the Festival Planning Committee. This was made up of representatives from community organisations including individuals of White British heritage. They collectively agreed on proposals in accordance with their budget and seek to achieve a balance which reflected activities in the area.
I urge any group to put forward proposals. Tell the Festival organisers what you consider to be of cultural significance so that we can all continue to enjoy the colourful and fascinating dimensions of our amazing and diverse Burngreave Society. There is space for all of us to take our place.
Yours sincerely, Panni Poh Yoke Loh
