It’s official… people in Burngreave are feeling happier and safer and are enjoying an improving quality life!

In 2004, a total of 500 Burngreave residents from 4,200 households took part in the New Deal for Communities household survey.

The research, which is undertaken every two years by MORI, involves interviews with people who live in the 39 NDC areas across the country to looks at the impact of NDC programmes on the communities they work in.

Results showed that the number of Burngreave residents who feel their quality of life is fairly or very good has increased from 52% in 2002 to 79% now. In addition, those who are fairly or very satisfied with Burngreave as a place to live is up from 64% to 71%.

Other notable findings include:

  • 86% of people have heard of Burngreave New Deal of Communities (BNDfC) – a rise of 15% from 2002.

  • The impact of BNDfC on the area where 58% of residents surveyed think that New Deal activities have improved the area by a fair amount or a great deal

– an increase of 19% since 2002.

  • The percentage of residents who think their area has got slightly or much better in the previous two years is up from 29% to 58%.

  • People being fairly or very satisfied with local secondary schools up from 52% to 83%.

With regard to crime:

  • 20% of those surveyed felt very safe compared to 11% in 2002.

  • The percentage of residents surveyed very worried about being mugged and robbed down from 30% to 22%.

  • People very worried about having their car stolen down from 31% to 20%.

  • Residents very worried about having something stolen from their car, down from 30% to 19%.

  • The percentage of residents surveyed very worried about being sexually assaulted down from 20% to 10%.

  • Those very worried about being physically attacked by strangers down from 26% to 17%.

The Burngreave New Deal for Communities Police Team is reliant on valuable information from the members of the public and as a result some crimes have decreased year on year such as drug crime. The latest BNDfC Police Team crime statistics from 1 July 2004 – 1 Jan 2005 include:

  • 40% decrease in drug possession with intent to supply.

  • 100% decrease in certain offences that are racially aggravated relating to persons and property.

  • 70% decrease in drug possession (excluding cannabis).

  • 62% decrease burglaries of dwelling.
