Area Panel New Year’s Honours

On Thursday 27th January 2005, the Area Panel ‘honoured’ those people and organisations in our community that local people nominated because they ‘make a difference’ to living in Burngreave. There are three categories of Awards.

The local group/organisation that has made a major contribution to improving the lives of local people or the quality of the local environment Award was presented to The Pakistani Community Association & Multicultural Advice Centre, The Black Women’s Resource Centre and The Burngreave Messenger.

A worker in Burngreave who does ‘over and above’ what they are paid to do Award was presented to Laila Wragg, Co-ordinator for Life-long Learning; Panni Poh Yoke Loh, Green City Action Multicultural Events Organiser; Sue Graville, Headteacher at Owler Brook Primary School; Saduf Khan, Sure Start Parental Involvement Co-ordinator; Kathy Everard, Sports Development Worker and Rashida Hassanali, Community Education Worker.

A local resident who has made an outstanding contribution to improving lives of local people Award was presented to:

Gloria Campbell

Gloria is a regular helper at a local lunch club as well as working tirelessly in helping neighbours, friends and family.

John Vincent

A New Deal Board Member, involved in the Business Forum, Spital Hill Traders’ Group and the Adult Learners Group.

Betty Smalley

Betty is a founder member of Green City Action, and involved with many local organisations.

Patrick Edwards

A founder member of Burngreave Sports Network, he has voluntarily run the Burngreave Soccer School for five years.

Jean Wood

Jean works hard to improve the lives of the people in the Carwood area through the tenants’ and residents’ association.

Jean Armstrong

Jean is a founder member of the Parkwood Landfill Action Group.

Saleema Iman

Founder member of SCRAP, Recycling Matters and Green City Action.

Fred Woodbine

Fred has been a governor of Pye Bank School for over 30 years and organised the older persons’ lunch club.
