The Caribbean Sports Club’s adult football team have been going for thirty years. They’ve had their ups and downs, but this season has seen an exceptional start.

They are fourth in the league with two games in hand, and only one loss in thirteen games. The team’s coach, Andy Kiwomya, told the Messenger:

“We are playing in a hard division, but we’re looking good for promotion. All the games are tough in Division Two and it’s a test of how consistent the team can be.We have individual players that can turn a game but it’s about the team really – from the secretary, to the manager, to the goal keeper to the scorers.”

Andy is only five seasons out of professional football himself, having played for Barnsley, Bradford City and Sheffield Wednesday. But even during his professional career he coached in Burngreave, and is pleased to see other teams developing in the area.

“It’s important kids can progress at all age ranges and eventually play for adult teams. That’s why we want the Sports Club team to play at a good, semi-professional level so the kids can have something to aim for.”

The team is open to anyone over the age of 18, from any section of the community:

“We really reflect the Burngreave community with players from the Yemeni, Somali and African Caribbean communities. Refugees often come and play with us.”

Andy is encouraging people to come and train on Wednesday evening at Fir Vale Sport Centre (Fir Vale School) 8.00–9.30pm. You don’t need to join the team – just turn up on the night and enjoy some football.
