Burngreave Voices Launch

Saturday 9th October 2004, 11am–4pm, Verdon Recreation Centre Launch of Sheffield Museum’s Burngreave history project.

Liverpool trip

23rd October 2004 – Visiting Merseyside Maritime Museum, to look at Liverpool’s slave past. Dinner and evening entertainment at Merseyside Caribbean Centre. Dominos for the elderly. Football, basketball and netball for the young people. £5.00 – limited places. Jamaica Aid Group working in partnership with Listen to Us. This trip is subject to funding.

Burngreave Hall of Fame

Is there someone from the Black Community of Burngreave that you would like to nominate to the Burngreave Hall of Fame? Nominees will receive a certificate of recognition and a permanent reminder of their achievement will be displayed at BCAT on an engraved plaque.

Oral History Project

Preserve your experiences for the next generation! Destinations Arts is running some Caribbean history workshops in October. We would love to hear from different generations. Tell us about the differences between the Caribbean and the UK! We would like to hear about mongoose tales and folk tales, or bring something interesting in to show us. http://www.makedigital.org/.

Using books for well being and relaxation Monday, 18th October 2004, 2–3pm Burngreave Library Bernard Murphy talks about the ‘Reading and You’ scheme and how it has helped people to improve their health.

Chinese Brush Writing

For ages 4–7 with artist Panni Poh Yoke Loh Thursday 21st October 2004, 1.30–2.30pm, Burngreave Library Have a go at putting brush to paper and learning Chinese characters.

Poetry Slam

Saturday 23 October 2004, 2–4pm The Furnival Two teams of poets – Burngreave vs ‘The Rest’ – in a contest of words, wit and performance. Poets have two minutes to make their mark on ‘judges’ selected from the audience. All welcome. For more information contact Matt on 255 4030.

Poetry Competition

Can you write 20 lines of poetry about Burngreave?

Enter up to three poems on the theme of Burngreave, maximum 20 lines per poem. Winning entries will be published in the Messenger and broadcast on BBC Radio Sheffield. Winner will receive a £20 book token and be notified by post.

Poetry Workshop

Wednesday 20th October 2004, 1.30–3pm, Burngreave Library. Advice for writers entering the Poetry Competition or for anyone waiting to shape their ideas into words. Bring along the spark of a poem and we’ll see if we can kindle it.
