Environmental learning at Firs Hill

Story by Rashida Hassanali

We’ve started a ‘fruitful’ partnership at Firs Hill Community Primary School with the Community Forestry Team, GreenWatch Rangers and Green City Action, all helping us with environmental activities for Family Learning Week.

Nursery children and their families planted hyacinths in decorated pots for winter colour and lovely scented flowers.

Older children helped Simon, from the Community Forestry Team, plant two apple trees in the school playground, using the ‘pit planting’ method.

Enthusiastic helpers poured soil into the tubs, dug the holes and helped to ‘tread in’ the root ball. Bulb planting completed the day’s learning, with Simon giving the children tips on how to look after the perennials donated by GreenWatch, using the tools bought with funding from Area Panel.
