Story by Carl Rose
Daniel Jackson and Tanya Bailey have just started working for the Burngreave Sports Project to work with children and teenagers from Burngreave, organising and running activities and trips.
I first met them as they ushered a group of lively lads onto a coach after giving them a guided tour of Sheffield United’s football ground. Seeing how they interacted with the boys showed me how comfortable they were in their work.
“The kids warm to you once they know you are local yourself,” said Tanya.
Tanya used to work as a community warden in Burngreave, but felt this new job was more what she was looking for, while Daniel had previously just being doing odd jobs. “It feels good to have something full time,” he added. “Burngreave had stayed the same for years and there weren’t many work opportunities, but over the past few years I’ve noticed a change.”
“If it wasn’t for New Deal, I’d probably still be on the dole,” added Tanya. “Our work has offered us more than just a job. Three times a week we go to Norton College and learn about sports and recreation. By the end of the year we could be qualified sports coaches.” Daniel added enthusiastically, “I’ll be studying for FIFA-approved Level 1 football coaching. Working whilst getting a qualification is a good incentive to work within the community.”
When asked where they see themselves in the future, Tanya answered, “I’ll probably still be working in the community. It’s your people you’re dealing with, and I like that.” A laid back Daniel replied, “I’ll take it as it comes.”
