Hall of Fame

Story by Rob Smith

On 27th October 2004, many gathered at SADACCA to celebrate the achievements of others from our diverse community.

The Burngreave Hall of Fame was organised by the BCAT’s Listen To Us Project, whose workers, Owen Wright and Nolian Rankine, presented the awards ceremony in a really professional manner.

“This is all about showing young people that there are positive role models in the community,” added Mai Mustaphanin, BCAT’s Development Worker. BCAT Director Donovan Modest said:

“It is important to see recognition being given to individuals who have made positive contributions towards the development of Burngreave. In future we would like to see an annual event to mark out and recognise individual achievements that represent all of Burngreave’s diversity. Congratulations to all those who receive awards here this evening.”

The award winners

Mr Martell Forrester

The first presentation was made to Mr Martell Forrester (right), in recognition of all the charity and aid work he has created for countries overseas, and over many years working in and around this city and community.

Bishop Melville

Bishop Melville of Shiloh Church was awarded for her work across the city and long-standing dedication that has positively affected many within and outside our community during her 35 year ministry.

Chris Obodo

Owen announced Chris Obodo’s award for many years of voluntary community representation on boards, trusts and committees. “These positions Chris has filled have helped effect many decisions made for positive change to our community,” added Owen.

Janet and Philip Beki

Also awarded were the hat shop proprietors who began a business that many people said wouldn’t work in Burngreave. Janet and Philip Beki thanked the people of this community for their support and plan to develop their shop ventures further in the future.

Gloria Campbell

Gloria Campbell is a lady they referred to as ‘The Rock’ who while active in the senior citizens’ community also looked after a sick relative for many years. Gloria received her award and was accepted into the Hall of Fame.
