Story: Rob Smith

Nellie’s Sandwich Shop

This sandwich shop has been open and serving our community for well over eight years and Nellie Ramsey explains that she’s been living here all her life. “This is my community Rob, and I wouldn’t want to live anywhere else.” I asked what sort of meals Nellie sells most, and she informed me that chicken sandwiches as well as liver and onion, are amongst the establishment’s favourites.

“Liver is good for your blood, we also prepare proper beef steak and all halal meat,” adds long-time associate and business partner Nadia.

I asked Nellie what she felt about the service she provides, “When my customers enjoy my food, this of course makes me happy.” I enquired whether this was a competitive business and Nellie said that with other shops around it was, but felt she got her fair share of business. “Some people have their business to get rich, but I just want to make a decent living.”

I asked if they felt any sense of community where they worked and resided – both admitted they did. I then enquired whether they believed New Deal had achieved anything positive for them. “Yeah” said Nellie, “But maybe we’re all not making the best use of it.”

For Jamaican fruit punches, juices, patties, soft drinks as well as freshly cooked and prepared hot and cold food, it’s happening at Nellie’s Sandwich Shop. Nellie is also open to take food orders for community-led functions and events as well as daily food orders. So for any further information please contact the number provided above.
