There have been a number of traffic accidents and thefts from both vehicles and people in and around Ellesmere Children’s Centre on Ellesmere Road. This is a long stretch of road that runs from Petre Street down to Ellesmere Green roundabout.
Sharon Curtis, manager of Ellesmere Children’s Centre, expressed major concerns not only about petty theft from vehicles but also parking and double parking outside the centre itself. Due to the narrowness of that part of the road there has been major congestion and accidents involving speeding vehicles.
“Recently a pregnant lady visiting the centre had her parked car smashed into by a speeding motorist. Luckily she was inside the centre at the time.”
Parents have signed a petition calling for road safety measures to be increased outside the centre. Parents have recommended speed bumps as well as widening that stretch of Ellesmere Road. “Members of the New Deal Police team said speed bumps would be too expensive,” claimed Sharon.
The petition has been sent to the council and other relevant officials. “Through the petition we are pushing to have this issue resolved for us. The safety of parents and children attending this centre is a priority,” added Sharon. “I’ve also asked for both parents and users of this centre to park on nearby Maxwell or Bressingham Road. Hopefully this will help alleviate some of the congestion.”
